Bringing in the new year of 2021 many of us want to leave 2020 behind. Let’s be honest 2020 was a crazy year and many of us probably forgot about a lot of the things that happened over the past 12 months. So, with that in mind, I decided to break down the year of 2020 month by month and talk about the crazy things that happened.

January — Australian Forest Fire

In January, the largest forest fires in Australian history started in December 2019 and didn’t end until May 2020. The Gospers Mountain Fire burned approximately 46 million acres. From the fires it burned 3,500 homes and killed 479 people. These forest fires all started from a lightning strike and alleged arson.

February — President Trump Impeachment

Believe it or not the impeachment of President Trump was only in February. I know I know, doesn’t it seem like it was years ago? Nope it wasn’t. He was impeached on February 5th, 2020 by the House and Senate for obstruction of congress and abuse of power. President Trump was the third president to be impeached behind Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton. The outcome of the impeachment was President Trump remained in office and was only acquitted by the US Senate.

March — Tiger King

Tiger King was a huge hit in March, receiving 34.3 million views in its first week of release on March 20th. In case you were not one of those 34.3 million viewers, the true crime documentary followed a big cat owner in his transformation from an attention seeking zoo owner to a criminal being charged with Murder-For-Hire along with Lacey Act and Endangered Species Act.

April — Covid-19

No surprise, Covid-19 was a big issue in the year of 2020. When Covid-19 became an issue it wasn’t until late March early April, and many of the states went into quarantine asking many non essential workers to stay home. In many parts of the country, Covid-19 wasn’t a huge issue until the end of April. From April until the time I’m writing this in the New Years it has been an ongoing problem, with cases continuing to rise.

May — Murder Hornets

If you remember, murder hornets were a big scare in May. There was a nest found in Washington state with about 200 murder hornets. According to the New York Times, roughly 50 people die from these murder hornets every year. From this year onward, Washington and the Canadian border will be closely monitoring the situation.

June — George Floyd

On May 25th, 2020, George Floyd was killed by Derek Chauvin who used the neck hold on him after he believed he used a counterfeit 20 dollar bill. After this there was a massive walk out protest promoting Black Lives Matter across the country of people of all ages making their voices heard. Derek Chauvin is set to go to trial in March of 2021 for second degree murder and manslaughter.

July — Massive Twitter Hack

July 15th stands as the date of the biggest hacking scandal the company of Twitter has ever faced. This hack was done by Bitcoin cyber scammers who targeted 130 high profile accounts. Some of the accounts that were targeted were Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk, Kanye West and Kim Kardashian West, Barack Obama, Joe Biden, Bill Gates, Mike Bloomberg, Wiz Khalifa, Apple, Uber and Square’s Cash App.After the brief hack Twitter promised to upscale their security.

August — Tiktok Ban

Tiktok ban and Tiktok ban was a huge topic in August, along with most of the next couple of months. The Trump administration said that the app was a national security risk and would be banned if it wasn’t sold to a US company. After many lawsuits were filed many injunctions were granted. Tiktok is still around for now, but we still don’t know what is going to come after the Trump Administration leaves office.

September — Online Schooling

September was the start of online schooling for students across the country. Many schools were giving students the option for hybrid learning, half in school half online. The only other option in most cases was fully remote. As a result of this, many students are struggling with their grades because they prefer in person learning.

October — President Trump Diagnosed With Covid-19

On October 2nd, President Trump tested positive for Covid-19. He was then transported to Walter Reed Hospital for better treatment. He was discharged a few days later from the hospital and finished the rest of his quarantine and treatment in the private quarters of the White House. Ten days later his doctor told the press he tested negative for Covid-19 and had no symptoms.

November — Election

November was election month, with Election Day being November 3rd. America never got the results until Saturday the 7th. Due to the results of Joe Biden being the projected President of The United States, there came over 60 lawsuits to claim voter fraud or other issues. Out of all 60 cases only one was won by the Trump Administration.

December — Vaccination

The final month of 2020 came with some good news: we got two vaccines approved to start giving treatment for Covid-19. The Pfizer vaccine was approved and started vaccinating first, and then Maderna was approved. At the end of 2020, 4.5 million people were vaccinated, with many people still left to be vaccinated.

I’m sure not all of these things have been forgotten about, but I’m sure some were, especially those from the beginning of the year. Those are what I believe were the most important events of 2020, even though I didn’t even touch on half of the things that came with this crazy year. I hope 2021 becomes much better for everyone and more positive things happen in these next 12 months.
