Maryland Governor Larry Hogan says Trump Should Not Seek the White House in 2024
Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan says that former President Donald Trump should not run in the 2024 election for the presidency. Hogan cited several reasons during his remarks. He noted that Trump is not getting any younger, with the former President currently standing at 75 years of age. Hogan also stated that he doesn’t believe that Trump’s ego could handle another election loss, noting that 2020 was just too much for him.
Hogan has also been critical of the way Trump handled his loss in the 2020 election, with the Maryland Governor giving support to those in the Republican party who dare to speak out against Trump’s message that the election was stolen. This, in turn, has led Hogan to side with those considered moderate in the Republican party, such as Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney and New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu, just to name a few.
Hogan hasn’t just been critical of former President Trump. He has also spoken out, urging members of the Republican party to resist nominating anyone who allies with Trump or acts as a “cheap impersonation” of the former President. Hogan was questioned as to who would fall into that list, to which he responded that it was a long one. He was also questioned specifically about Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and if he fell into that category. Hogan’s response was “Ron DeSantis has to win his reelection first down in Florida and we’ll see what happens in ’24. But, you know, I just think we ought to go in a different direction.”
Hogan himself is currently serving his eighth year in the Maryland Governor’s seat and is spending a lot of time trying to make a name for his wing of the Republican party. He has planned to give speeches, even traveling to California, to try and spread the word about his hopes for the future of the party. He hopes thatefforts like this can help to swing people in a more moderate direction.
That being said, he also has expressed worry about who will be elected in 2024, saying that it is likely that those in the moderate wing will likely all be “fishing from the same pond” then. His ultimate hope is that they can determine who will be best fit to make a run at the 2024 election, and who will be best fit to try and lead that new wave of moderate Republican support should it come to fruition. Another possible runner for the position alongside the names previously mentioned is former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie. While Christie has expressed support for former President Trump over the years, he has also given heavy criticism for Trump’s refusal to concede to President Biden in the 2020 election. Christie has also criticized the ongoing efforts of those who ally with Trump to attack the results of the 2020 election and say that it was stolen.
Hogan has not yet expressed whether or not he will make a run at the White House in 2024, saying that he will make that decision next year. For now, Hogan is shifting his focus to some of the key races across several other states. In the race for Georgia Governor, for example, Hogan has expressed his support for incumbent Brian Kemp. Kemp is facing opposition on the right from former Sen. David Perdue. Perdue, to this point, has centered his campaign on the 2020 election, trying to spread the message that it was stolen from the Republican party. Hogan hopes that Kemp can overcome this challenge, and show that you don’t need Trump’s support to win in the Republican party. This is again just one over several races Hogan, and the moderates in the Republican party will be watching as the election season continues.
