Michigan Governor Whitmer

Michigan’s Governor Gretchen Whitmer delivered her fourth and potentially final State of the State address this week. The address lasted about 25 minutes and she addressed setting a cap on insulin prices to 50 dollars, cutting taxes and reforming the Michigan Loan Repayment Program. She said in her speech that she was going to once again cross party lines to get her goals accomplished for the state.

Just like last year the State of the State address was delivered virtually due to the current state of the COVID-19 pandemic. In the beginning of her speech she wished the state a happy 185th Birthday and talked about how much the pandemic took from the state.

Soon after she got right to previewing her view for the states future starting off with eliminating the states retirement tax. I’m ready to work across the aisle to roll back the retirement tax and save 500,000 households in Michigan an average of $1,000 bucks a year,” Governor Whitmer said.

Whitmer also proposed an increase in the Earned Income Tax Credit that was repeatedly slashed over the years giving households a smaller return each year. Restoring the EITC lifts more than 22,000 people out of working poverty. And it sends 730,000 families an average refund of almost $3,000 bucks that they can use to pay the bills,” Governor Whitmer says.

The Governor also proposed a cap on insulin costs at $50 and an expansion of Michigan’s Loan Repayment Program for mental health professionals, to recruit and retain more workers to make sure every Michigander can take care of their mental health.

Michigan’s Governor Whitmer is up for re-election this year and is seeking another term Michigan voters will head to the polls on August 2nd for the states primaries.
