As we edge closer to the midterm elections, former president Donald Trump seems to be ramping up his activity in the public eye. During this period, he will likely be looking to bring attention to areas where Republicans feel the Biden administration has failed in its policy-making process. This fact is clear to see when it comes to the situation at the US-Mexico border, which the former president will be visiting this month.
The visit comes at the invitation of Texas governor Greg Abbott, who will be visiting the border on June 30. On Tuesday, Trump put out a statement formally accepting the invitation. The statement included him saying, “The Biden administration inherited from me the strongest, safest, and most secure border in U.S. history and in mere weeks they turned it into the single worst border crisis in U.S. history.”
It is widely believed that Trump will use the struggle at the border to get himself back in the limelight within the Republican party, as many within the party feel that the Biden administration have done little to nothing to fix the issue. Many Republicans are calling for either the President or Vice President Harris to actually visit the border, which neither of them have done since they took office. Despite Harris visiting Central America, specifically the countries of Mexico and Guatemala, Republicans say that more must be done to handle the problem.
Governor Abbott has also made the border a key part of his reelection effort, as the race for Texas governor is beginning to stir and the election happening in 2022. He has said that he plans to take action in an effort to get a handle on the situation within his state’s borders. He had already planned to take action before, when he had intended to revoke the licenses of the facilities housing children who had crossed the border. It wasn’t until the federal government threatened to sue the Abbott administration that the governor backed off from that idea.
That being said, Abbott does have other plans. During a border summit last week, he said that he plans to have anyone crossing the border into the US arrested on state charges and put in jail. His goal by doing this he said was to stop people from crossing the border into the country illegally into the state of Texas. He feels that the Biden administration has created an environment where people feel that they can cross into the country illegally with no consequences. This opinion can be seen when he said, “because it’s not what they were expecting. It’s not the red carpet that the federal administration rolled out to them. They are going to jail in the state of Texas.” Abbott also said that he would continue the building of the border wall started by the Trump administration to at least cover Texas’ southern border, planning to use state funds for the project. However, the legality of this plan would very likely be challenged by the federal government should these plans move forward.
Looking back to the plans of former President Trump, the border visit isn’t the only thing on his schedule. He has already visited North Carolina, where he joined an event to endorse U.S. Senate candidate Ted Budd. On June 26 he is said to be holding a rally in Ohio, and then after the border visit he has a rally scheduled in Florida. That rally is set to take place on July 3.
