Nine army bases throughout the US could soon be changing their names, moving away from the names that were meant to honor Confederate leaders. This is all happening because of a law that was passed back in 2020 which ordered that several of these bases change their names.
In order to determine the new names, a naming commission was formed. This commission held listening forums with military leaders and gathered 34,000 public comments. The commission then took all of the information they gathered and narrowed it all down to the final suggestions. These final picks will be presented to Congress in a report in October of this year.
While we don’t know for sure what the names of the new bases will be, we have a pretty good idea of how the name changes will go. A list of these expected changes can be seen below.

- Fort A.P. Hill to Fort Walker
- Fort Hood to Fort Cavazos
- Fort Lee to Fort Greg Adams

- Fort Polk to Fort Johnson
- Fort Rucker to Fort Novosel
